Initiation - Approach
Definition
The approach describes at a high-level how the project will accomplish its goals and objectives. It is the highest level work plan for the project. The approach statement may reference contingencies or alternatives, but should emphasize the intended direction of the project. It may also describe internal and external resource utilization, project dependencies, organizational impacts, specific technologies, procedural methods and techniques. The key to writing a good Project Approach Statement is to write it from the perspective of the reader and to keep the level of descriptive detail at a consistently high level.
Why is this important?
The approach statement benefits the project's sponsors and stakeholders, who may not be able to interpret the detailed work plans without a high-level understanding of the project's general methodology.
Instruction
Draft a short statement describing how the project will achieve its goals. Structure the statement chronologically, provide detail at the milestone, stage, or phase level, and address issues of major importance.
How to scale
Consider more narrative detail if it will promote greater project approach clarity.
